“This is NOT my
Art History.”
Andrea J. Price
A little over a year ago, I had just finished and presented a piece that would change my life. It was the moment I realized the power of my voice and stopped allowing outside forces to shape it. My black women’s voice is important and deserves to be heard.
I cut up old art masters’ paintings and rolled them into paper beads to recreate an art history that did not include me.

Resistance to the social injustices that exist requires a level of indignant joy that empowers forward movement. This type of resistance combats the oppression that was intended to crush souls. Joy acknowledges the presence of struggle and pain while still creating hope for change. As a result, sadness, anger, frustration, happiness, peace, and myriad of other feelings all have room to exist. Joyful resistance gives perspective to imagine and reimagine what true justice looks like. This space is necessary to mourn, sort, decompress, relax, laugh, and think about a way forward.
